Dear Barack Obama,
I’ve never met you. I think your smile is great. And, as one who regularly speaks in public, I admire your speaking!
I am a follower of Christ. As a Jesus follower, I follow his ways and seek to prioritize life according to God’s standards.
You and I might have some interesting discussion about those values and standards. We might disagree. If you ever want to take me to coffee, I’d be happy to listen!
(I will be in Washington DC in September)
It’s most likely we won’t meet, but there is one thing I’d like you to know:
I pray for you. I pray for your family who must be under immense pressure. I pray for your staff. I pray you’d have wisdom to lead well. I pray you would know the heart of God and make decisions that are best. I thank God for placing you as the highest authority in our land. I ask God to provide reprieve for your lonely times. I ask him to bring about trustworthy advisors and leaders.
And, I pray that you get some good basketball in every once in a while. I always feel better after running up and down the court!
I will be 35 in September. Finally old enough to be president. It’s good we’ve stipulated a minimum requirement. As I approach eligibility, I admit my eagerness to hold authority and position diminishes. It ain’t easy.
Oh yeah…one more thing, it seems that many if my fellow Christ followers have forgotten some obvious directives from scripture:
Do everything without complaining and arguing, (Philippians 2:14 NLT)
I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. (1 Timothy 2:1-2 NLT)
You’re probably used to the criticism. But, that’s my point, I would hope that Christ followers rise above the common rhetoric.
Well, that is all. See you in September?
